Fukushima City/Autumn tradition: “Ginkgo trees at Azuma Sports Park”

A truly spectacular view! A golden tunnel that goes on forever

The season of autumn leaves is almost upon us. Bandai Azuma Skyline is famous as a fall foliage spot in Fukushima City, but ''Azuma General Sports Park Ginkgo Trees'' is also a popular fall foliage spot among locals.

Fukushima Prefectural Azuma General Sports Park, located in Sawara, Fukushima City, at the foot of Mt. Azuma, boasts a vast site of 100 hectares, and is a comprehensive park with various facilities such as athletic fields, baseball fields, gymnasiums, and tennis courts, as well as parks with play equipment, picnic areas, and cultural facilities.

There are cherry blossom trees, roses, hydrangeas, mountain lilies, and other flower plazas within the park, but the ginkgo trees are what delight visitors in the fall. There are 116 trees planted along the approximately 520m long central garden path, and as autumn deepens, the leaves change from green to yellow-green, and from yellow-green to yellow, creating a majestic scenery.

The best time to see the yellow leaves is usually from late October to early November, but you can still enjoy the ginkgo trees even after that. When you look up, you can see a vivid contrast between the golden leaves and the clear blue sky of autumn, and when you look down, you can see a carpet of fallen leaves and walk through a golden tunnel.

The paved tree-lined path is easy to stroll around while pushing a wheelchair or stroller, and the round trip is approximately 1km, making it perfect for walking. In addition, the park is asking for cooperation in picking up fallen ginkgo nuts, and you can take the ginkgo nuts you have found home with you (you cannot take them home for sale). We also recommend bringing plastic bags, gloves, chopsticks, tongs, etc. to enjoy the flavors of autumn at home. If you wish to use the parking lot, the closest parking lot is the large parking lot that can accommodate 1,000 cars.
