“Akita City Omoriyama Zoo ~Akigin Omorin Forest~” starts regular opening
In March, the harsh cold in Akita City gradually eases and you can feel the signs of spring in the sunshine. The Akita City Omoriyama Zoo ~ Akigin Omorin no Mori ~, which was closed for the winter from December and only opened on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from January to February as a ''Snow Zoo'', will resume regular operations on March 18th (Saturday). Spring is the season when animals become more active and new life is born, making it the perfect season to visit zoos.
Omoriyama Zoo, which is located on a small mountain overlooking the Sea of Japan and Akita City and celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, is one of the most popular zoos in the Tohoku region, housing 550 animals of approximately 90 species.
The reason for its popularity is that you can enjoy seeing the animals up close. Based on the concept of ''a forest where you can talk with animals,'' we are holding ''behavior exhibits'' that take advantage of animals' natural ecology and behavior. You can experience animals in real life, such as the Amur tiger that approaches right in front of you just by a single piece of glass, and the ''giraffe window'' that allows you to see from the same height as a giraffe's face. In addition, there are many fun things to see, touch, and enjoy, such as the ''Feeding Experience'' where you can feed giraffes, monkeys, and capybaras, and the ''Asove Forest,'' an aerial animal observation playground where you can walk through the exhibition hall while playing athletically.
The person I would like to meet now is Hikari, a female snow leopard cub born in April last year. It's been 22 years since a snow leopard was born at the zoo, and Hikari is very popular. You are sure to be healed by the sight of him actively playing around in his fluffy form. Please note that male and female snow leopards are exhibited alternately, so please check the zoo's website for details.
Also, keep an eye out for new animals that joined last year, such as arctic wolves and Bactrian camels. Please come and meet the animals.
