Morioka City / Nambu Ironware: Traditional Craft, Modern Global Hit. What’s Behind Its Massive Overseas Popularity?

The image of Nambu Ironware as sturdy and subdued is evolving into vivid colors and modern designs.

Nambu Ironware is a traditional craft of Iwate Prefecture. Its history dates back to the Heian period, but its establishment in Morioka began when the domain lord of the Nambu Clan invited artisans from Kyoto with the development of the tea ceremony. For over 400 years since then, the manufacturing techniques for chanoyu gama (tea ceremony kettles) and tetsubin (iron kettles), using casting technology where iron is poured into a mold and solidified, have been continuously passed down.

Nambu Ironware is characterized by its weight, robustness, and unique, coarse texture. The charm lies in its black color and simple decorations, giving it a somewhat rugged and rustic appeal typical of Tohoku. However, in recent years, it has evolved into a brighter and more vivid image with a rich variety of colors and sizes. About 30 years ago, development of colorful teapots began at the request of a long-established French tea manufacturer, and after several years, technology for highly pigmented coloring was established. Ironware with striking, bright colors has also appeared, and the evolution of Nambu Ironware is surprising more people both overseas and in Japan.

The spread of its popularity overseas is now rapid, and it is cherished with such momentum that sales outside of Japan exceed those within Japan. While preserving tradition, its functionality has been enhanced to suit modern life, leading to the development of more sophisticated designs. Let's embark on a journey to experience the evolved beauty-in-utility of Nambu Ironware in its homeland.
