Aomori City / Jomon Mysteries and Massive Ruins: A Journey to Contemplate the Eons.
2025/11/27
Touching the Jomon spiritual culture that emphasized matsuri at a mysterious ruin.
The Komakino Site, on the other hand, is located at the foot of a tall mountain overlooking the cityscape of Aomori. This site centers on stone circles (kwanjō-resseki) constructed in the period immediately following the Sannai-Maruyama Site. Its most notable feature is one of Japan's largest stone circles, boasting a diameter of 55 meters, thought to be primarily a place for burials, matsuri, and ceremonies. While many contemporary sites feature stone circles, the Komakino Site's stone arrangement is truly unique. Most stone circles arrange the stones flatly, but the Komakino arrangement uses a three-dimensional layout, combining oval stones and flat stones like a stone wall.
The oval stones used here are believed to have been transported from a river located over 500 meters away, but the mystery of exactly how they transported approximately 2,900 stones to the small hill remains unsolved. Why and how did they carry out such a massive, painstaking construction project? Contemplating the distant, eternal passage of time may be the key to connecting with the Jomon spiritual world.
The adjacent Jomon no Manabiya Komakino Kan (Komakino Learning Center) offers a variety of fun exhibits, including excavation experiences, a stone circle assembly corner, and pottery puzzles. The center is also stocked with fun and cute museum goods overflowing with Jomon spirit (Jomon-ai), such as sunglasses shaped like dogū eyes and dogū stuffed-animal style pouches, ensuring delightful memories of your Jomon journey.
