Yamagata City / Discover the New Way to Experience Yamadera! Attractive Spots Emerge Around the Ancient Temple.
2025/11/27
Strolling leisurely through the town. A temple town that can be enjoyed in many ways.
Many people have visited here on school trips or other travels, but recently the number of foreign tourists has increased, creating a new flow of people. You can visit cozy and wonderful shops or leisurely enjoy experiences where you can enjoy Yamadera culture.
The observation deck at Yamadera Station is also a popular photo spot. Capture the refreshing atmosphere of the sacred mountain as it is in your photo. Near the station, you can find a soba restaurant where you can enjoy raw soba noodles from Yamagata Prefecture, and authentic cafes that offer home-roasted specialty coffee. At the Yamadera-yaki pottery studio near the trailhead, you can try your hand at pottery. Challenging yourself to make a memory is one option. A new café opened by a proprietor who has studied abroad for many years has also appeared nearby, creating a new buzz. At Yamadera Hie Shrine within the precincts, be sure to try your luck with the popular mizu-omikuji (water fortune slip).
The option of not aiming for the summit this time is actually also available. Taking advantage of the easy access—about 20 minutes by train from Yamagata Station—it has evolved into an attractive place that you will want to visit casually again and again.
