Moss-covered boulders, a pilgrimage path embraced by nature. Adjust your mind through worship.
Yamadera is a sacred mountain representing the Tohoku region. Its official name is "Hōjusan Risshakuji" (宝珠山・立石寺), and it was founded in 860 by the Tendai Buddhist priest Jikaku Daishi. This entire mountain, made up of strange rocks and boulders, is a place of ascetic training and faith, and is also known as the place where Bashō composed his famous haiku, "Shizukasa ya / Iwa ni shimiiru / Semi no koe" (Ah, the quietude / Sinking into the rocks / The cry of the cicada).
When you arrive at Yamadera Station or the parking lot at the foot of the mountain, the magnificent mountains will jump into your eyes. You will be overwhelmed by the power of the towering gigantic strange rocks. This famous temple, known as a power spot for cutting off bad luck and attracting good relationships, requires climbing 1,015 stone steps to the summit, so it is recommended to use a walking stick or poles that can be rented at the shops at the foot of the mountain to reduce the burden on your body. Following the example of our predecessors, let's get motivated by trying Chikara Konnyaku, a Yamadera specialty said to be the ancestor of Tamakonnyaku, Yamagata's soul food.
Upon passing through the large main gate, the air is filled with a solemn and tranquil atmosphere unique to a sacred place. A small path surrounded by greenery serves as the worship path, and the round trip time to the Okunoin (inner sanctuary) at the summit is about 60 to 90 minutes. As you look at the moss-covered boulders, old stone lanterns, and beautiful nature, and concentrate on your breathing while climbing the stone steps, you will gradually feel your body being filled with fresh air. After visiting Semizuka, Okunoin, and the Kaisandō and Godaidō, which are famous for their views from the cliff face, and descending to the main gate, you will feel very refreshed. You can truly experience why it is called a power spot.
