2024/12/01
The real thrill of skiing through ice fields on one of the largest ski slopes in Tohoku
Yamagata Zao is the symbol of Yamagata Prefecture and delights visitors with its seasonal scenery. It is also known as a famous spot for frost-covered trees, and during the season from late December to late February, tourists from all over the world come to see the ice art created by nature. There are also many activities where you can enjoy high-quality powder snow.
This time, we will introduce activities that you can enjoy in Yamagata Zao in winter, from standard winter sports to guided tours recommended for those who are not familiar with playing in the snow.
Skiing and snowboarding are the standard snow activities in Yamagata Zao. There are also unique ski resorts, including Zao Onsen Ski Resort, one of the largest in Tohoku with a total ski area of 127.22 hectares, which is a popular spot that attracts skiers and snowboarders. Suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers, there is a wide variety of courses that take advantage of the characteristics of the slopes. In particular, sliding while feeling the power of frost-covered trees up close is an experience unique to Zao. The night skiing on the fantastically illuminated ski slopes is also different from the daytime experience.
There are plenty of rental shops within the ski resort, where you can rent not only skiing items but also clothing. That kind of ease is one of its charms.
