Sendai City/Donto Festival, a festival to pray for health for the year with the sacred fire
2024/12/01

A winter tradition of burning moon decorations
A New Year's farewell event held during the Small New Year to pray for health and happiness in the new year. In Miyagi, it is affectionately called "Donto Festival".
On the day of the festival, January 14th every year, large sacred fires are lit at each shrine, and worshipers throw in New Year's decorations and old sacred cards brought from their homes. It is said that touching the fire will guarantee good health for the coming year, so worshipers join their hands in front of it and offer prayers.
The Donto Festival is not only a custom, but also an important event that revitalizes the local community. By bringing together local people and working together, they have strengthened their bonds and played a role in passing down local traditions to the next generation.
