Akita City/“Miyoshi Bonten Festival” where devotees bravely fight for the lead in the shrine grounds
2024/12/01

The highlight is the ''fight offering'' dedicated to the ''god of power.''
The highlight of the festival is the fierce struggle within the precincts to take the lead in the dedication of Brahma. It is also commonly known as ''Fighting Brahma'' because the dedicaters violently clash their bodies and compete to be the first to go after the god of power, Miyoshi Reijin.
On the day of the festival, each group goes around the town with Brahma in hand. Afterwards, while performing exorcisms, they form a group and make their way to the shrine, echoing conch shells and Brahma songs.
As soon as we entered the shrine grounds, the battle for the first place quickly reached its climax. In addition to the battle for the lead in the dedication, the festival reaches its climax with the participation of those who try to rip the Triangular Guardian, which is said to contain strong spiritual power, from Brahma. The dedicated Brahma is enshrined on the east side of the shrine grounds overlooking the sacred mountain Taihei where the inner shrine is enshrined.
A winter tradition in Akita that brings together both the devotees and the visitors. It looks like we'll be surrounded by a lot of heat this season as well, blowing away the cold.
