Morioka City/ A solemn “naked visit” to pray for good health and a prosperous year.

A small New Year pilgrimage event that originates from the prayers of Nanbu chief brewers.

After purifying themselves, the men parade through the town in the bitter cold of winter, wearing white headbands on their lower belts, shimenawa ropes around their waists, bare feet in straw sandals, paper in their mouths, bundles of money in their right hands, and bells in their left hands. The sight of them heading towards the shrine, with the bell in their hand making a sound of "shan, shan", exudes solemnity.

Morioka City's ''Naked Shrine'' is a New Year's pilgrimage event that has been passed down since the feudal period to pray for good health and a prosperous year.It is said to date back to the Edo period when Nanbu Chief Brewer prayed to Matsuo Shrine. The ''Nanbu Toji'' refers to a group of chief brewers who originate from the territory commonly known as the Nanbu domain, and whose origin was the brewing technique for ''Sumi sake'' brought to the Nanbu territory by Omi merchants in the early Edo period. Matsuo Shrine is dedicated to Oyamagui no Kami, the god of sake brewing, so it was customary for Nanbu brewers to offer prayers for ''this year's preparation to go well.''
