Akita City/“Kanto Taikitsu Tournament” to liven up the daytime during the festival period
2024/06/03

Judging will take place in four categories: “Group Regulations,” “Group Freedom,” “Individuals,” and “Hayashi Musicians.”
Now let's take a look at the details of the tournament. Kanto are divided into ''Owaka'', ''Chuwaka'', ''Kowaka'', and ''Yowaka'' according to size, and the largest Åwaka is 12m tall and weighs 50kg. The technique is ''nagashi'', where the bamboo is gradually joined in order to lift the kanto, and the technique is called ''hirate'', ''forehead'', ''shoulder'', and ''waist'' depending on where the kanto is held still. In particular, the ''waist'' technique requires the most skill, and is performed at the climax of the night performance. The trick to handling it is said to be ''4 parts strength, 6 parts technique,'' and a sense of balance and posture are the most important.
At the tournament, in addition to competing in individual and team competitions using these techniques, judges will be held in a total of four divisions, including ''hayashi-kata'', which competes for flute and drum performance skills. During the tournament, it's fun to hear spectators chanting ''Dokkoisho'' along with the techniques. Due to the influence of the new coronavirus, shouting was prohibited from 2019, but it was finally revived in 2023 and has regained its vitality.
The fun of the festival is not only at night. Please enjoy it to the fullest from Hirukanto.
