Fukushima City/“New Waraji Festival” reborn with an eye toward the future 100 years

Taking the opportunity of the 50th festival, the festival will become even more spectacular and large-scale.

"Fukushima Waraji Festival" is counted as one of the six major festivals in Tohoku. It is known for its 12-meter-long giant waraji (wara sandals) leading the dancers, drums, and flutes as they chant "Washoi! Wasshoi!" as they perform the dance.

Did you know that the Waraji Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019 and was reborn as the "New Waraji Festival"? The goal of the renewal was to create a festival that would still be loved 100 years from now. Rather than simply embodying the elements of ''what was cool at the time'' and ''what was trending,'' we focused our wisdom on creating a festival that we could proudly pass down to the future, while valuing the culture and history of Fukushima City. By revisiting the roots of the ''Waraji Festival'' and reaffirming the story that led to the present day, we have created a new festival that is more heroic and larger than ever.
