Morioka City / “World’s Largest Taiko Parade” registered in the Guinness Book of Records
2024/06/03
“World No. 1 title” earned twice
Morioka Sansa Odori is held every year from August 1st to August 4th in Morioka City. It is known as a lively festival where people dance while beating drums. On June 29, 2014, the group attempted a Guinness World Record with a parade featuring only Sansa Taiko drums, and was recognized as the ''Largest Japanese Drum Ensemble'' (largest number of Japanese drum performances), which also became a hot topic. Since then, the ''Taiko Drum Parade'' that was held during the Guinness Challenge has become an annual program on August 4th, the final day of the festival.
The Guinness World Record was originally set in 2007 for a drum parade held to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Morioka Sansa Odori. However, that record was broken in 2011 by an event held by Kumamoto City. The city of Morioka was inspired and three years later they attempted to set the world record again at the Iwate Prefectural Sports Park Track and Field Stadium. We were able to successfully regain that position.
