Akita City/Cosmos Road, autumn leaves light up… A relaxing walking spot to feel the autumn atmosphere
2023/09/07

"Cosmos Road" along the Tsugawa River, where about 100,000 trees are in full bloom.
The ''Akita Kanto Festival'' is a summer tradition in Akita, filled with excitement as the kanto techniques performed by skilled kanto artists excite the atmosphere. While enjoying the afterglow of that day, the season gradually shifts from summer to autumn. Why not take a stroll around Akita City and feel the changing seasons?
Cosmos flowers begin to bloom from early September on the left bank of the Kusaotsu River that flows through Akita City. The seeds are sown every year and carefully nurtured by the NPO ''Hana to Kaze no Machi Net'', which operates under the theme of community development in harmony with nature and the environment. The project began in 2003 when cosmos were transplanted to part of the embankment as part of efforts to improve the waterside environment of the Kusaotsu River. This activity received a lot of attention, and many citizens, including neighborhood associations in the river basin, began to participate. It was named "Cosmos Road" and has gradually expanded in size, and is now considered one of Akita City's famous attractions.
There are approximately 100,000 cosmos blooming along the 0.9 km stretch of river. Various varieties cover the area, including the well-known variety ''Sensation,'' ''Orange Flare,'' and ''Campus Yellow.'' The best time to see them is from mid-September. You can enjoy the pretty flowers until late October.
