Sendai City / Walk through new spots surrounded by nature and temple towns that preserve history

A peaceful and leisurely stroll along the green alley lined with temples

Slightly away from the bustling central area, near the east exit of Sendai Station, is the Shinji district, which has a nostalgic atmosphere. As the name suggests, this is an area where temples and shrines gather. It is said that when Sendai first opened, this area was located at the demon gate from Sendai Castle, so many temples and shrines were placed there to prevent demons from coming and create a temple town. Also, in the Edo period, there were eight old mounds whose origins are unknown, so it was called ''Yatsuzuka.''

There are many historic temples in the Shinji area, and the temple grounds are planted with famous and old trees that have been designated as preserved trees by the city, and the gardens are also beautifully maintained. Admiring the seasonal flowers and trees and clasping your hands at the temple are other ways to spend time in a temple town.

Additionally, for a walk around the area, we recommend the ''Shinterakoji Green Path,'' a 640m east-west promenade that runs from Shindera 2-chome Hasuike Park to Shindera 5-chome Park. Cherry blossoms and camellias are planted along the street, and benches are also set up. The handmade market that is held regularly is also popular.

Why not spend a relaxing time walking through the quiet and calm Sendai, which is a little different from the busy downtown area lined with buildings and famous tourist spots?
