Sendai City / Walk through new spots surrounded by nature and temple towns that preserve history

Aobayama Park has become even more attractive with the birth of new facilities

About 15 minutes walk from Kokusai Center Station on the Tozai Subway Line. Aobayama Park, a park surrounded by Sendai's symbols, Aobayama and Hirose River, is surrounded by nature. Citizens enjoy the scenery that changes with the seasons, such as cherry blossom trees creating a tunnel of flowers in the spring, dazzling greenery in the summer, and golden yellow ginkgo trees in the fall. There are also historical attractions such as the equestrian statue of Date Masamune in the Honmaru Square, and Goshikinuma, the moat on the site of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle).

And in April of this year, a new facility, Sendai Ryokusaikan, was opened on the grounds of the park, on the site of the former residence of Kojuro Katakura, a senior retainer of the Sendai domain, which provides a variety of information on Sendai's history and culture, and serves as a place for people to interact. Inside the building, there is an information lounge where you can experience festival culture such as the Sendai Aoba Festival and the Sendai Tanabata Festival, a cafe and terrace where you can spend time overlooking the Hirose River, and outside there is a ''Forest Garden'' inspired by the vegetation of Mt. Aoba. The garden is full of attractions, including the tea ceremony room ''Zangetsutei'', which is designated as a tangible cultural property by the city.

Aobayama Park is located close to the city center, yet allows you to forget the hustle and bustle of the city. The view from the Sendai Castle Honmaru Ruins, which offers a panoramic view of the Sendai city area, is also outstanding.
