Yamagata City/Nanukamachi, a city of culture and art that retains the scent of history

Gotenseki, which was built 400 years ago, is now a place of relaxation for citizens.

Nanakamachi is the commercial center of Yamagata City, offering shopping, gourmet food, and sightseeing, and is a must-see spot when walking around the city. A network of five weirs built by Tadamasa Torii, the lord of Yamagata Castle, flows through the city of Yamagata 400 years ago, and they are collectively known as the ''Yamagata Five Weirs.''

One of them, the 17.5km long Gotenzeki, which runs through Nanukamachi, was originally built to fill the moat of Yamagata Castle. Later, as times changed, the water was used for domestic and industrial purposes, and although it became more contaminated at one point, the quality of the water has improved. The smooth and beautiful sound of water soothes the hearts of the citizens.

The Nanukamachi Goten Weir is a part of the Goten Weir that has been developed and is creating a new bustling tourist spot. Clear water flows through the stone channel, and willow branches sway gently. Nearby, you can see people sitting on benches and enjoying the atmospheric scenery. Along the side of the Goten Weir, there are rows of townhouse-style buildings, creating an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you have traveled back in time to this area. The soba shops, cafes, and miscellaneous goods stores that operate within the building are also popular.

Gotenseki, the symbol of Nanokamachi, is the perfect place for a leisurely walk.
