Cherry Blossoms
Sendai City/A historic cherry blossom viewing spot that has watched over the city’s changes.

A vast cherry blossom viewing plaza appears during the cherry blossom season.
Nishi Park is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in the center of Sendai city. It may not be well known that it is actually the oldest park in the city. The park opened in 1875 (Meiji 8). After the Meiji Restoration, Miyagi Prefecture acquired the land that once housed the residences of Sendai clan vassals and developed it into a park. It was originally named Sakuragaoka Park, and that name is still preserved in Sakuragaoka Daijingu Shrine, which is adjacent to the park. The current name ''Nishi Park'' comes from the fact that it is located to the west of another historic park, ''Katsuraoka Park.'' Approximately 200 cherry trees are planted in the park, and in 2017, cherry blossoms brought from six prefectures in Tohoku were planted.
The Nishi Park Cherry Blossom Viewing Square is opened during the cherry blossom viewing season, which usually occurs in early April, when many stalls are set up and lanterns are lit at night.
Easy access as it is close to Omachi Nishi Koen Station on the Tozai Subway Line. Please enjoy strolling around the stalls while admiring the cherry blossoms.
