A spectacular group of frost-covered trees that symbolizes Hakkoda in winter

If you visit Sukayu Onsen in winter, you should definitely stop by Mt. Hakkoda. Aomori fir, which grows wild, grows large with snow and ice, creating a wonderful group of frost-covered trees. The frost-covered trees of Mt. Hakkoda are large and some of the most beautiful in Japan. It is one of Japan's three major frost-covered trees, along with Zao in Yamagata and Mt. Moriyoshi in Akita.

We recommend starting from the trailhead near Sukayu Onsen and climbing while enjoying the frost-covered trees, but if you use the ropeway, even those who are not confident in their physical strength can easily enjoy the view from the top of the mountain. It takes about 10 minutes from Hakkoda Ropeway Sanroku Station to Sancho Koen Station. The vast panorama that stretches out between them is also a highlight. There is also a tour that takes you to the top of the mountain by ropeway, then puts on snowshoes and walks down through the frost-covered trees. The peak season is usually from January to February. Even though you can get there quickly by ropeway, it can be very cold at the top of the mountain, so please take proper measures to protect yourself from the cold.
