Yamagata City/Enjoy nature with steamy Zao Onsen, snow monsters, and frost-covered trees

No complaints about the power of the hot springs! Warm your body from the core in the highly acidic sulfur springs

Yamagata Zao, where you can encounter the blessings of nature throughout the four seasons. Winter fun is Zao Onsen, snow activities such as skiing and snowboarding, and admiring frost-covered trees.

Zao Onsen, which has a history of 1900 years, is a strongly acidic sulfur spring with a pH of 1.25 to 1.6. It is characterized by a tingling sensation and is said to be good for skin diseases due to its strong antiseptic properties, and is also called the ''hot spring for beautiful skin'' because it has the effect of softening and melting dead skin cells.

In addition to having a variety of accommodation facilities such as inns, hotels, guesthouses, and pensions, you can choose according to the purpose and style of your trip, and one of its characteristics is that it has a wide range of day trip bathing facilities. There is also a facility where you can enjoy a ''snowy open-air bath'', and if you take a deep soak in the bathtub and look at the snowy scenery, you will experience an indescribable luxury.

There are three public baths in the hot spring town: Kamiyu, Kawaharayu, and Shimoyu. Among them, Kawahara-yu, which has a slatted bottom, is famous for its fresh water gushing out from the source directly below. The bathing fee is reasonable at 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for children, so be sure to stop by.

Please note that the strongly acidic sulfur springs will corrode precious metals black, so be sure to remove any accessories before bathing. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to rinse off the hot spring ingredients with hot water or a shower.
