Akita City/Akita International Dahlia Garden: Colorful dahlias created by “God” and the wonders of autumn leaves

The world-famous ''God of Dahlias''

This garden was originally opened by Koji Washizawa, a private dahlia breeder, when he was 40 years old. Mr. Washizawa encountered dahlias while visiting Vancouver for work when he was an office worker, and was so captivated by their fascination that he began breeding dahlias on his own. In 1995, he created the variety ''Kurocho,'' which had a deep wine red color that had never been seen before in dahlias, and made his name known to the world. Since then, he has continued to actively breed dahlias, and has won many honors, including being the first Japanese to win the Grand Prix in the foreign category at the 2004 International Dahlia Show. By the way, approximately 70% of the dahlias currently distributed in Japan are made by Mr. Washizawa. Dahlias used to have limited uses, but with the introduction of many beautiful varieties, they have now become a popular flower material. Currently, Koji's second son, Koji, is also a dahlia breeder and is in charge of running the garden as director. The story of the father and son couple was introduced on a TV program and became a hot topic, so many people may know about it.

Around the park, there are spots for eating, drinking, and souvenirs, such as the Akita City Yuwa Tourism Exchange Center ''Villa Flora'' and the gelato specialty store ''GELATERIA yuwa'', so there is so much fun to enjoy that you can spend a whole day enjoying it. Please enjoy the collaboration of autumn leaves and dahlias this fall.
