Autumn in Mt. Hakkoda brightens the desolate “hell”
Now, ''Jigoku-numa'', a 5-minute drive west of here, is also a hidden spot for autumn leaves. Nearby is Sukayu Onsen, famous for its 1,000-man bath, and this is also where the source of the hot spring gushes out. The water in Jigoku-numa is hot spring water that has accumulated little by little from a crater created by volcanic activity. The water is so acidic that no fish can live there, and no plants can grow around it. There are also many fumaroles around it, from which hot water of 90 degrees Celsius and gas containing sulfur are spewed out. The smell of strong sulfur and the smoke of steam makes it feel like hell. A desolate landscape spreads out.
However, in autumn, the atmosphere changes completely. The red beech and maple trees of Mt. Hakkoda, the red rhododendrons and the green pine pine are reflected on the surface of the lake, filling the area with vivid colors. The white steam creates a dreamlike atmosphere that looks like a painting. The drop in the gap is also one of its charms.
Furthermore, if you drive for about 10 minutes from Sukayu Onsen towards Aomori city, you will arrive at the foot station of the Hakkoda Ropeway. It is also recommended to enjoy the autumn leaves spreading out below from the gondola. Enjoy an autumn holiday where you can delight your eyes with the collaboration of various locations and autumn leaves.
